The future of Justice (retd) Javed Iqbal, the current chairman of the Accountability Bureau (NAB) in the government of Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, is expected to be decided soon. The incumbent Prime Minister and members of his party have in the past accused the NAB of being used for political purposes, calling its chairman a controversial figure.
It may be recalled that the current Chairman NAB was appointed by PML-N Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi on October 8, 2017 in consultation with the Pakistan Peoples Party. On Tuesday, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, senior vice president of the ruling PML-N, once again slammed the NAB and its chairman and called for its abolition. Justice (retd) Javed Iqbal has completed his term in October 2021, but the PTI government had issued an ordinance allowing him to continue his work till the appointment of a new chairman. However, the opposition strongly opposed the ordinance.
The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Amendment Ordinance 2021 has been in force since October 2021 after the approval of the Federal Cabinet and the signature of the President of Pakistan Dr. Arif Alvi.
Following the enactment of this ordinance, Justice (retd) Javed Iqbal will remain in his present post till the appointment of a new Chairman, despite the expiration of his term as Chairman NAB.
